Only 7% of people had a good understanding of gynaecological symptoms before experiencing them

The UK’s leading gynaecological cancer charity, The Eve Appeal, has published new survey findings to launch its annual fundraising and awareness-raising campaign Get Lippy, which runs throughout May.
Only 7% of people had a good understanding of gynaecological symptoms before experiencing them

May was 'Get Lippy Month' where The Eve Appeal raise awareness of the five gynae cancers and encourage everyone to Get Lippy and Loud by opening up life-saving conversations about gynaecological health. We are sharing the results of our recent survey (Yougov) which found that only 7% of people said they had a good knowledge of gynaecological symptoms before they personally experienced them or a loved one did. Worryingly, only 5% of people believed they had good knowledge of the gynaecological cancers (womb, ovarian, cervical, vulval and vaginal).

“These results highlight a worrying gap in both knowledge and awareness.” Says Eve Appeal CEO, Athena Lamnisos: “When it comes to health issues, we know that fear, stigma and embarrassment are reduced when a subject is normalised and understood – that basic health education needs to start at an early age. That’s why Get Lippy is such an important campaign – we need to help everyone have normal conversations about gynaecological issues. Knowing basic information about signs, symptoms and cancer risk factors such as the HPV virus, is vital to supporting people to keep themselves well.”

All through May we are joined by a host of health and beauty brands who will be giving at least 10% of sales of selected products to help fund research into the prevention and earlier diagnosis of gynae cancers. We will also be sharing key gynae health information on our social channels all month long. Follow us and share @Eveappeal.
