There’s no limitations for dreams

As we mark Refugee Week 2003, which runs from June 19-25 and which aims to inspire, educate and raise awareness of the situation refugees face, Ali Hamed, a nurse on Hawthorn Ward, at Tickhill Road Hospital, Balby, spoke of his journey to the UK on the Refugee Pathway.

The pathway was set up in partnership with Talent Beyond Boundaries and its aim is to support refugees who have a background in nursing to return to nursing practice in the UK and work in the NHS.

Ali (27) was born a refugee in Palestine. He became a registered nurse in his homeland but always dreamed about being a doctor, something he wasn’t able to study for due to being a refugee.

He saw the opportunity to come to work in the UK and took it in 2022, successfully applying to work for Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Foundation Trust (RDaSH). His wife Marwa also later joined him and now works for RDaSH and is pursuing her nursing registration in the UK.

On his arrival to England, Ali undertook a four week training programme at Liverpool John Moores University before coming to Doncaster.

“I’m now considering studying for a master’s degree,” said Ali. “I would like to be an Advanced Nurse Practitioner. That’s my first goal.   Then I may study for a PhD. There are no limitations for dreams.

“Nursing is nursing everywhere,” he added. “Patients are patients everywhere and care is care everywhere. I am really enjoying working in Doncaster with a brilliant and very lovely team.”

Ali added: “Doncaster is a very nice city, a quiet city, not expensive. The only difference between here and back home is the weather!”

Toby Lewis, RDaSH Chief Executive, said: “It is terrific to hear Ali’s story and success.  The Trust has agreed to expand our work supporting the education and employment of healthcare workers among local migrant and refugee communities, and alongside local authority partners we see real opportunity to draw on the talents and ambitions of many forced to flee to the UK, who have a huge amount to offer and teach our NHS and other care organisations.”
